Water Treatment
Industries are producing tons of wastewater every day. If this wastewater and urban sewage water get disposed of in the environment without any treatment, it could cause severe health damage to humans and most importantly, to marine life. That’s why sewage water treatment is a necessary process to ensure the safety of our environment and public health. The use of chemicals is essential in this process to remove contaminants, pathogens, and other harmful substances from wastewater. Selecting the appropriate additives in water treatment that are effective and safe for the environment is essential for successful treatment of water.
One of the most commonly used chemicals for water treatment is pH regulators. When these acidic or basic regulators are added to the wastewater, they allow hydroxide ions to bond with heavy metals and precipitate out of the solution. In addition, greater acidity will kill bacteria and organic compounds by breaking them down at a cellular level. Commonly used pH regulators include calcium chloride and citric acid monohydrate. when handled correctly, these chemicals do not pose significant environmental risks.
Water softeners are another widely used chemical additives in water treatment. Water softeners reduce the amount of Calcium in the water, making it soft. These include sodium pyrophosphate.
Reducing agents are chemicals used in water treatment to remove harmful substances. One of the most commonly used reducing agents in wastewater treatment is sodium metabisulfite.
Chemical treatment for water also includes the use of antiscalants. These chemicals inhibit the formation and precipitation of crystallized mineral salts that form scale. Some commonly used antiscalants for water treatment are sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP) and dicalcium phosphate.
Corrosion inhibitors are another commonly used chemical in water treatment processes. They are used to protect the treatment system from corrosion. These include calcium propionate, sodium glucose, sodium sulfite and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP).
Some other chemicals used in water treatment are stabilizers like tetrasodium pyrophosphate, water hardness adjusters like calcium chloride and odour and precipitation controllers like sodium metabisulfite.
